Review: Cold Queen - K. Webster

Cold Queen Cold Queen by K. Webster
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

This book was a surprise in the fact that it reads like a fairy tale ‘Frozen’ with some awesome twists and turns and some epic steaminess. The book shares Queen Elzira’s a story. She is a Queen with a deep and frozen heart (or so she thinks) who is dying whilst trying to protect her kingdom and her sister, Yanna. Elzira has had to grow up fast to take her place on the throne when her beloved father and step-mother are murdered. She takes her younger sister under her wing to look after her rather like a child than a sister, and both of them seem to have a good connection, protecting each other when it is needed.

One day the Bloodsun King, Ryke arrives wanting to use Elzira’s kingdom as a base before he moves on to conquer more lands and also to take a wife who initially is Yanna but then changes rapidly to Elzira when he sees who she is and what she can do. The chemistry between both Elzira and Ryke is smoking hot with a little bit of dominance from Ryke thrown in for good measure as well as the snarkiness that both characters throw at each other. They both definitely content for who is going to be on top….it pretty much is always going to be Ryke!

This story has a lot of layers, firstly you have the fairy story layer, then the additional stories of a variety of characters, then the layer of Elzira and what is happening to her. It is a very intriguing if sinister take on a classic fairy story and it’s not for the faint hearted. The description of the palace and kingdom is wonderful and at times you feel like you are a fly on the wall watching how these characters interact with each other as well as seeing, feeling and smelling the ice and snow that surrounds not only the kingdom but Elzira herself.

The book is surprisingly fast paced, with twists and turns throughout the whole story. If you like your fairy tales dark, twisted and steamy then this one is totally for you!

ARC received for a fair and honest review.
