Review: Driven - Rebecca Zanetti

Driven Driven by Rebecca Zanetti
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Driven by Rebecca Zanetti is book four in the Deep Ops series. It tells the story of Angus Force, who we have met in a previous book, who has an obsession with a serial killer who everyone else thinks is dead. When bodies start showing up with clues that lead to the dead serial killer, Lassiter, it is a race against time for Angus Force to bring him down….but not everything is what it seems. Thrown into the mix is Nari Zhang, the shrink for the Deep Ops Unit, which Angus runs. Although both of them are attracted to each other, they haven’t made a move, mainly due to the fact that Angus is obsessed with a dead man and Nari has her own issues to deal with. Only with her being thrown into the focus of a killer, does it seem to bring Angus out of his fugue and realise his true feelings for Nari.

This book was brilliant! If you have read the previous stories in this series, then you know that they are going to be action packed, with lots of twists and turns. Well, this one is no different. Not only do we have the growing relationship between Nari and Angus (which is super steamy), we also have precious characters popping up as well as what had happened to Nari in her previous role at the HDD.

Driven is a thrilling page-turner of a read. It seems to have everything you want in a book; romance, suspense, intrigue and lots of things getting blown up (I also didn’t see the twist at the end…..brilliant)! This book certainly doesn’t disappoint.

ARC received for a fair, honest and sometimes long review. All opinions are my own. 😊

Review: Stone Cold Queen - Lucy Smoke

Stone Cold Queen Stone Cold Queen by Lucy Smoke
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Stone Cold Queen is book two in the Sick Boys series by Lucy Smoke and boy does it start off with a bang! If you have read the first book in this series, you know we were left with a cliff-hanger and some rather important questions unanswered. Well, from the first page, we are thrust face first back into Avalon’s life and finding out some more truths about her and Dean’s relationship as well as others that are around her.

This is a no holds barred book. Avalon is an intriguing character in the sense that she is brash, rough around the edges and unapologetic for the way she lives her life. Having been burnt by so many people before, she is slow to trust and always trusts her instincts. Her relationship with Dean and the rest of the Sick Boys is complicated and intense. There are moments where both Dean and Avalon’s toxicity and possessiveness comes through with each other, but they are both so passionate and stubborn that they really do work well together. I wouldn’t say either Dean or Avalon are likeable characters, but there is something about them which makes you keep turning the pages to find out what else is going to happen!

Like book one, this book is full of questions, some which get answered, some which become more confusing and conflicting. Characters change sides depending on how the wind is blowing and you are still left trying to figure out how Avalon fits into the whole thing.

This book is gritty, unapologetic and suspenseful. Lucy Smoke is a must-read author, and I can’t wait to see what else is to come for Avalon and the Sick Boys.

Review: Loki's Luck - Monique Moreau

Loki's Luck: A Bad Boy Biker Romance Loki's Luck: A Bad Boy Biker Romance by Monique Moreau
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Loki’s Luck is book three in the Demon Squad MC series by new author to me, Monique Moreau. The book is insanely hot and focuses on the characters Loki and Abby. Loki is still reeling from the death of his brother and does nothing but blame himself for not noticing how bad his brother was doing. To get through the day, he is pretty regimented, from what he eats, drinks and says etc. Owning and working in the gym seems to be his only outlet, that is until Social Worker Abby storms into his life and turns it upside down.

Abby has had her own tragedies in life after losing her mother at such a young age and all she wants to do is help people. When part of her job takes her into Loki’s gym and due to her clientele becoming part of a self defence class, she is instantly attracted to the gruff yet handsome man who does nothing to endear himself to Abby.

The story focuses not only on the love development and both character’s getting to know one another but also on Loki himself and what he needs to give up in order to live a full life. The story focuses heavily on Loki pushing Abby away and it was great to see that she gave as good as she got. There were some genuine moments of heartbreak in the story (no spoilers), especially when it is the MC’s enemies that end up hurting Abby. But we see the MC pull together and Abby becomes one of their own!

I loved everything about this read! From the main characters, their flaws, jokes, sweet times and understanding of one another (even though Loki is certainly stubborn), to the smoking hot sexy scenes between the two. I loved the other characters that pop up and even though this is a first time read from this author for me, I know that it isn’t going to be my last. This MC book is a page turner and has everything you want in an MC read, from actions to passion, snarkiness to a brotherhood, it is all in the pages of this book.

I can’t recommend it highly enough! This is definitely an author I will be reading more of!

Review: The Prince and the Thief - P. S. Scott

The Prince and the Thief The Prince and the Thief by P.S. Scott
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐ stars

The Prince and the Thief is a fantasy-based LGBTQ+ novel by P.S. Scott.  The story looks at the main characters Will (the thief, who also has magical powers) and Aiden (the prince). One day both of them are thrown together when Will comes across Aiden giving help to someone in the street. This is the beginning of their story. From there we see the story develop as Will is thrown into Aiden’s life, trying to help him steal back some important letters that Aiden’s uncle is trying to blackmail him with. From their unlikely partnership, we also see their feelings for each other develop as both characters struggle with their place in the ‘worlds’ that they live in.

There is a lot going on with the story line in this book, not only do we have a budding romance, but we also have intrigue, politics, secrets and some twist and turns along the way which make this an easy and enjoyable read. As it is a series, there are some questions left unanswered, story-lines under-developed and some characters who we are left wanting to know more about. But, overall, a good read!

Review: Big Bad Wolf - Suleikha Snyder

Big Bad Wolf Big Bad Wolf by Suleikha Snyder
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐ stars

Big Bad Wolf is book one in the new Third Shift series by Suleikha Snyder. The story focuses on main characters Joe Peluso and Neha Ahluwalia. Neha is a junior associate who also has a background in behavioural psychology. She is given the task of analysing the recently incarcerated Joe who is on trial for a sniper attack on the local Bratva and the reasons why he did it. Mixed in with the story is the introduction to paranormals who have burst onto the scene during the Darkest Days which has now pitted humans and paranormals against one another.

There is a lot going on in this book (hence it being the first book in the series). Firstly, we have the will they/won’t they relationship between Neha and Joe. Then we also have the paranormals themselves and world building. Even though this book is set in 2016, it is a completely different world from the one we know and has huge urban fantasy vibes going on. We also have the story on how Joe became what he is and the background information on that.

Overall, this is a good start for a new series, with some insta love characters who go to and fro with their feelings, but they are still pretty likeable and help shuffle the story along. The world building is good if a little long, but the story does get there in the end. A different take on the werewolf genre, but still a good read.

Review: Lord of London Town - Tillie Cole

Lord of London Town Lord of London Town by Tillie Cole
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Lord of London Town is book one in the Adley Series by Tillie Cole. It tells the story of Cheska Harlow – Wright and Arthur Adley. Cheska is a socialite from the right side of London. She lives a pretty good life but harbours a secret, an obsession with a boy who lives in the darkness and who will do nothing but shake up Cheska’s life.

Arthur Adley is certainly from the wrong side of the tracks, an East End gangster, he is seen as the devil himself. But this doesn’t out Cheska off. Throughout the story they keep meeting again and again, almost as though they have a dark incessant pull to them. Their story is dark and twisted as both of them come to terms with what being with each other looks like and what they will have to sacrifice to be together.

This is an unforgivable dark tale which weaves a web around you and leaves you wanting more. We see how Arthur’s life is chaotic and bloody and how Cheska is drawn like a moth to a flame with him, even though at points it could be detrimental to her own safety and sanity. Cheska is a strong female who goes through so much in this book but comes out strong and a little twisted at the end. Her relationship with Arthur is hot and she really gets the rest of the gang and what has made them who they are.

The story has moments of tragedy, darkness and vulnerability from both Arthur and Cheska. Arthur really does open up to her in the most heart-breaking of ways.

I have never read a Tillie Cole book before, but if this is the standard of writing; the angst, the drama, the darkness, then count me in!

Review: Not My Match - Ilsa Madden-Mills

Not My Match Not My Match by Ilsa Madden-Mills
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Not My Match by Ilsa Madden-Mills is book two in The Game Changers series. It is a wonderfully, sweet book with some great characters. The book focuses on the nerdy Giselle and football player, Devon. Giselle is a wonderful character, trying to make her way in a  world which can be quite hard for those who are passionate and a little different. I loved that she didn’t get how wonderful she was and just thought that she was quirky. When a fire breaks out in her apartment, Devon comes to the rescue and allows her to stay with him, even though he has some reservations to begin with.

Devon has been warned to stay away from Giselle as she is too sweet and not worldly wise, but she just has a connection to Devon which was great to read about. Devon is a soft, caring man who just wants the best for his family as well as Giselle. Even though they are good friends, you see them slowly becoming more throughout the book.
There are some wonderful parts in this story. It is at times hilarious and passionate but full of quiet understanding as both characters want to be the best in their profession and don’t always know how to balance out the work/life balance. I also enjoyed the secondary characters and their camaraderie with both Devon and Giselle.

All in all, a wonderfully sweet friends to lovers read with a great story and great characters.

Review: Omertà - A Very Mafioso Christmas - Various authors

Omertà - A Very Mafioso Christmas Omertà - A Very Mafioso Christmas by Bree Porter
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Chastity was a short story by A.J. Wolf in the Omerta – A Very Mafiosa collection of short stories by various authors. A.J. Wolf’s story focuses on Chastity who it seems is going to be a strong and feisty character when we see her story develop into a full-length release. Already in the short excerpt we see Chastity playing with three men….we don’t quite know who they are or what they want but we certainly know that they all have a history with Chastity. The ending is intense and has an epic cliff-hanger. I can’t wait to see what is to come.

The anthology as a whole has opened me up to reading new authors so that I can know more about the characters that are presented. Overall, a great Mafia Christmassy read!

"Wow, this book was a 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫." - Amazing_reads

There is nothing safe about being with Nixon Cole.
He contradicts everything I believe in, stands for everything I hate, but being with him… I’ve never felt more alive or understood.
I extend my hand toward him. A silent offering.
He looks at it like it’s the strangest thing he’s ever seen. Then, slowly, oh so slowly, he puts his hand in mine and pulls me to him.
“What happened to just once?”
With my free hand, I reach for his face, my fingers gliding over his skin and memorizing every line of his face.
I trace the outline of his lower lip, a tingling sensation spreading through my arm. He sucks in a breath, his mouth parting slightly.
“You happened.”

Review: Steel - Mackenzy Fox

Steel Steel by Mackenzy Fox
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Steel is book one by new author to me Mackenzy Fox. The story focuses on Sienna and Steel AKA Jayson. Sienna has moved to Bracken Ridge, Arizona after her father dies and is trying to get his affairs in order whilst trying to escape her past. To make her life more difficult she comes onto the radar of the Rebels MC whose land the MC club is on, she now owns. But she comes up against Steel, the Sergeant at Arms of the MC who is moody, rough around the edges and doesn’t want to get involved with Sienna. What happens next is a story of fighting our demons whilst opening ourselves up to new opportunities.

This book was wonderful… it is full of amazing characters who I can’t wait to read about and a flowing storyline that keeps you wanting to turn the pages. Finding out about both Sienna and Steel’s background at times is harrowing as they both have a lot of baggage which they bring into their relationship and they both seem to be walking through landmines as they try and work for a future together. I especially liked Sienna’s journey which has left her defeated and when she comes across someone like Steel who is ultimately dominant and at times high-handed, we see Sienna’s sass and strength come out. These two characters certainly do complement each other. They also have some extremely hot chemistry and Steel is not afraid to ask for what he wants!

Secondary characters were amazing and I’m excited to see what is going to happen next in this series. This story was a great read and addition to MC books everywhere. If you want a sexy MC story with some strong, sexy and sassy characters , a great storyline then this is a must read for 2020!

Review: Kiss To Forget - Anna B. Doe

Kiss To Forget Kiss To Forget by Anna B. Doe
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Kiss to Forget is book two in the Blairwood University series by Anna B. Doe. This story is a heartbreaker! The story focuses on Yasmin and Nixon. Yasmin is a young woman who knows her own mind and works hard to be ay Blairwood. She volunteers, works and studies who comes from a single parent family, so her and her mother have had to work hard for everything they have. She is also best friends with Callie ( who we met in book one). Her life is very different in comparison to Nixon, who is the quintessential all-American sportsman. Everything seems to have come easy for Nixon, but behind is suave and cockiness is a young man who has secrets and seems to have the weight of the world on his shoulders. Both of their worlds collide when they go from enemies to lovers, but whose heart will be intact at the end when secrets come to light?

This was a beautifully written story. The chemistry and sass between Yas and Nixon is phenomenal. I loved that Yas didn’t jump to be with Nixon straight away and that it was only through seeing his true self that she saw the man that he was underneath. We see through the eyes of young men and women as they navigate the harsh realities of the world around them and Yas and Nixon are no exception, both having to deal with a lot of secrets and hurt.

This book has a lot of drama and angst at there are moments of true heartbreak! And it is a total page turner! The characters are brilliant, the story is brilliant.

This book is going to bring you to tears! Its about friends/family, growing and holding people close. If you’ve read Anna B. Doe before, you know that this is going to be a great book. If you haven’t read her before, then you need to start now!

Review: In for a Penny - Melissa Foster

In for a Penny In for a Penny by Melissa Foster
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

In for a Penny is a sweet little novella by Melissa Foster. The book tells the story of Penny and Scott who are characters that pop up in the previous book ‘The Gritty Truth’. We see how their relationship has quickly progressed from friends to lovers, but something seems to be missing…the three little words that everyone wants to hear…I love you. Although Penny knows that Scott feels that way, we know that his upbringing has made it difficult for him to have a relationship with women other than his sisters and even though his relationship with Penny is progressing, there are times where he questions what will happen when Penny wants more. What will happen when things happen which neither have any control over?

This story was bittersweet, heart-breaking, funny, lovely and everything else in between novella. We as a reader get entrenched in Penny and Scott’s relationship, whilst seeing other characters from previous books too. Everyone has advice for the couple, but it really is their own feelings and communication with each other which make this story. Sometimes you don’t need the words, especially when throughout the book we see Scott love Penny in every possible way!

A perfect, quick and easy read with some brilliant characters. I can’t wait for more!

Blurb:

Once upon a time, the Vlasta Vipers hockey team was so incredible — on and off the ice — they were almost mythical.

Back then, they were the undefeated conquerors of the rink.

Coveted prizes for Puck Bunnies.

Their reputation was ironclad until the wrong skates landed on the wrong feet.

Wanted titles suddenly became dreams instead of reality, while the spotlight only seemed to capture their continued failures.

Puck Bunnies...well, they never stopped treasuring that particular stick no matter what the rankings were.

It took several years, a new no nonsense head coach, and a group of players willing to work harder than they could even comprehend to grab back the notoriety.

But they did.

And just because it's summer doesn't mean the city is done watching or caring about them.

Hugo Rhinehart, the team's most famous defenseman - due to his enormous size and impressively stoic nature - is very aware of this, thanks to tickets to see him play in the volunteer league being repeatedly sold out.

As long as the attention is focused on his performance and not who he's sleeping with, he'll be fine.

As long as the crowd is more concerned about his hockey crew's off-season shenanigans and not about the overdramatic ones of his best friend-turned boyfriend, he'll cope.

As long as the gossip is about who he physically hurt in his jersey and not who's emotionally hurting him, he'll survive.

Will this big burly defenseman be able to defend his hard-earned position in both sports and romance, or will he have to give up the love of the game to keep the love of his life?
