Review: King - K.L. Donn

King King by K.L. Donn
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

King is book one in the Adair Empire series by K.L. Donn and boy does it start off with a bang! Lilith Riley knows that she has a debt to pay and that debt is to none other than King Adair, a man who runs his empire with an iron fist and makes no apologies for it. But he knows that Lilith is different, coming from a background of despair, he has been watching her and is intrigued by her strength and kindness in the face of horrible circumstances. Although he is going to break her and make her pay, he is also going to make her his queen!

This is a fast paced, hot and steamy read. Not only are we transported into King’s empire, with some really intriguing characters. We are also given two complex main characters to read about. We have the strong, feisty yet vulnerable Lilith and the often stoic, strong alpha in King who is only soft for his queen. There is certainly a lot of chemistry between the two and we see their instant attraction to each other from the beginning of the story, right the way through to the end when they have both faced trials and tribulations. This book has actions, danger, sexy scenes with some moments of realizations from both characters, Lilith realizing that she is not her past and King realizing that he can love.

Secondary characters in this series have entertaining moments and it will be interesting to read their own stories as some of them are a little cray-cray! An enjoyable new series for me and I can’t wait to read more!

Review: Rough and Tumble - Shae Connor

Rough and Tumble Rough and Tumble by Shae Connor
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Rough and Tumble by Shae Connor is a sweet book about Grant and Darryn, two college students, roommates and best friends. They share everything with each other…at least they thought they did, until secrets are told and their relationship changes…not initially for the better. The story shows Grant and Darryn trying to repair their friendship when both of them are hurt. We definitely see more of what Grant is thinking and feeling, not only about coming out in general (and how hard that is for those of us that have gone through that), but also about dealing with changes in a friendship, especially when the friend is in a toxic relationship that you don’t agree with.

This is a slow burn romance with very little sexy scenes, but heavy on the angst. We see through the eyes of both Grant and Darryn and how they are both afraid: to be together, to be alone, to come out, to be gay, all of which is complex and doesn’t happen overnight. The characters were actually young adults who didn’t have everything together, got things wrong, mis-communicated and hurt each other….stuff which normal, everyday people do. I also liked that we saw into what it was like to be a male gymnast as most sporty type books focus on football, baseball of hockey, and the hours of training that goes into being an elite athlete.

What I especially liked about the book was the family dynamic that both characters had. Grant with his sister and Darryn with his father. And although it didn’t tick all my boxes for a steamy read, it was still a cute LGBTQ+ read with some heavy themes throughout it.

ARC received for a fair, honest and sometimes long review. All opinions are my own. 😊

Review: Cross the Line - Becca Steele

Cross the Line Cross the Line by Becca Steele
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Wow, what did I just read! This novella was everything that I hoped it would be. Kian and Preston’s story is amazing: warm, steamy and at times heart-breaking. Preston is new to Alstone High from America. If his life wasn’t difficult enough, he also becomes the ‘star’ player for the school football team, taking over from Kian who is normally the teams MVP. Kian really doesn’t like being replaced and goes out of his way to make Preston’s life difficult. But their attraction runs deep and soon enemies become something more.

I absolutely loved this story! We’ve met both Preston and Kian in a previous book, which left us intrigued about there relationship and Ms. Steele has certainly delivered in bringing us more detail about both of their lives. There are certainly some heart-breaking moments when we see how Kian’s parents’ treatment causes Kian to second guess himself, and we see true vulnerability from him in a number of scenes with Preston. Preston on the other hand is such a strength, even though he is nervous about being at a new school, he knows his worth and even Kian’s and he definitely brings out the best in Kian….even his devilish side.

This book was all about the sexy, the scenes between the two were smoking hot, intense and sometimes angry which kept you turning the pages. This was a story about crossing lines, finding yourself and loving someone no matter the cost. A brilliant read!

ARC received for a fair, honest and sometimes long review. All opinions are my own. 😊

Review: Smoke Bitten - Patricia Briggs

Smoke Bitten Smoke Bitten by Patricia Briggs
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Smoke Bitten is book 12 in the Mercy Thompson series and I feel like I have been waiting forever to read it. Mercy is back and in more of a dilemma than usual. Not only have we got the Underhill turning up outside in her garden, we also have a new monster, rouge werewolves, a psychotic vampire and a tension between her and her hunky werewolf husband, Adam. Let’s break it down….at the end of the last book and their battle with the witches, everything seemed to be up in the air with Mercy and the pack.

In Smoke Bitten, we see that things still haven’t calmed down and even though Adam’s ex-wife Chrissy isn’t in this book, she still manages to cause issues between Mercy, the pack and Adam, with Mercy bang in the middle when she tries to act as a go between, between Jesse and her father. Enter a lot of things being said and Mercy being truly hurt by how Adam treats her. This seems to be a theme throughout this book and we as a reader see true vulnerability coming from her as she worries about her marriage and why Adam has been acting the way he has. (No spoilers….but that story was really cool, heart-breaking and different).

To make matter worse, Underhill has also opened right outside in the packs garden and we know that it isn’t going to go smoothly, especially when we find out that something evil has been released from there. You can’t speak its name as names have power, especially with the fae. The monster is also complex, devious and evil and we have to watch Mercy fighting it in reality and her subconscious too.

There is also a sub-plot going on with rouge werewolves who are trying to cause trouble for the pack, a psychotic vampire (Wulfe) whose endgame we don’t know and a plethora of characters who all have an opinion on literally everything.

This series just keeps getting better and better and even though there is a lot going on in this book, it does all tie together with a few story-lines being left open, hopefully to be answered in the next book? Secondary characters also help to make this book, from Ben, to Jesse and even Wulfe, everyone has a place and a reason for being in this story and I just can’t recommend this series enough. You may want to start with the first book though, just so you know who everyone is and what place they have in the story. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Mercy and Adam and the rest of the ‘Scooby gang’.

Review: Shadows in Death - J.D. Robb

Shadows in Death Shadows in Death by J.D. Robb
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Shadows in Death is book 51 in the ‘In Death’ series by the fabulous J.D. Robb (AKA Nora Roberts). This time we follow Lieutenant Eve as she tries to catch a killer from her husband Roarke’s shady past. The story begins with a woman being murdered in a local park and although neither Eve or Roarke know the woman, Roarke sees someone from his past in the crowd and knows that they are the killer and are going to come for him and his family next.

As with previous books in this series, the story is fast paced and we see the usual characters turning up to help Eve and Roarke. Eve is her usual snarky self, but we do see moments of vulnerability from her, especially when it comes to Roarke and how he is dealing with this person from his past and what memories that brings up. I actually loved that we got to see a little bit more from Roarke, his family from Ireland and how he not only handled the killer but having his fingers in so many pies.

I love this series! They are great reads, with some action, fun and a little bit of drama. They are a must read for those that don’t really want to overanalyze everything that’s going on in a book and simply want to enjoy it!

Review: Bane's Choice - Alyssa Day

Bane's Choice Bane's Choice by Alyssa Day
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Bane’s Choice is book one in the new series: Vampire Motorcycle Club by Alyssa Day. The story focuses on Bane a centuries old vampire and Doctor Ryan St. Cloud. Bane is the quintessential, arrogant male who at the beginning of the story comes across as really angry and in need of revenge. Being part of a MC also means that he has a lot of people to look after but at times he can come across quite heartless as he doesn’t really care about who dies in his club except a few close ‘friends’. The story starts strong with us being encapsulated in a paranormal story where all the things that go bump in the night live and breathe in a modern world, but don’t necessarily get on.

We’re introduced to the head strong Doctor St. Cloud when Bane barges into her hospital trying to help his seriously injured friend and tried to glamour the head strong doctor, which just doesn’t work. Here, Ryan enters a world that she never knew existed while questioning everything she knows and her sanity. But like most paranormal books, the human isn’t going to be left alone and she is dragged into Bane’s world, albeit a little bit reluctantly.

There is a lot going on in this novel (mainly due to the fact that it’s the first in a series), not only do we have the building love story between Ryan and Bane, we also have the fight for territory between the supernatural factions going on as well.  As a reader I was a little confused at the beginning as you really do jump into the middle of the story before really knowing anything about Bane and his MC, but more info comes out throughout the story which helps to place where people belong and a little bit of their history.

This is an exciting new read with a twist on the traditional MC book. If you like your men broody and your women headstrong, then this is the one for you!

**This story is a m/m bully romance including dubious consent, assault, talk of suicide, and is intended for readers 18+. Please proceed with caution.**

About the Author:

Sarcastic and snarky, I love to laugh and read dark fucked up shit. I write about tortured pasts and hot sex, a happily ever after that has to be worked for. My stories tend to be a little dark but with some comic relief, typically in the form of sarcasm.

I like to dabble in a little of everything when it comes to stories. Romantic suspense, MM, a bit of erotica, with plans for Greek retellings, maybe some fairytale retellings, and some shifters. I write broken people who fight for their happily ever after, in all the many forms it takes.

I married a sexy man in uniform who let me spawn and am now raising a mutinous army of hell raisers that I created myself, all while he defends our country. I drink too much coffee and am sexually frustrated for your freedom. If you see me online, I'm probably sitting in a closet, hiding from my kids.

I have a ridiculous addiction to Archer, Sherlock, Supernatural, and The Big Bang Theory. I live my life spewing TV quotes and sarcasm. I'm a self confessed ass, not easily offended, and I love to laugh, almost as much as I love sleep. My laundry is rarely folded or put away and I have probably only showered once this week.

I hate schedules and planning, I have calendars, planners, and my phone yet can’t remember anything. Somehow, I’ve managed to keep 3 kids alive but I really need to become an adultier adult.

Review: Trick Me Twice - Becca Steele

Trick Me Twice Trick Me Twice by Becca Steele
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Trick Me Twice is a standalone novel by Becca Steele. The book focuses on Carter Blackthorne and Raine Laurent. Carter is a football player and bonafide king of Alstone High School. He’s arrogant, rich and also vulnerable. Raine is his neighbour and all-around good girl. She is put on a pedestal by Carter’s family and he’s told to be more like her at every opportunity, but things aren’t as rosy for Raine as Carter would like to think. Hiding in the shadows, Raine has social anxiety, her family is on the verge of being broke and even though she lives with her aunt, she is bringing herself up.

The story looks at the developing relationship between the two main characters. When Raine inadvertently tricks Carter, he does his all-round best to make her pay, whilst in the shadows something more sinister is brewing. This is a bully romance with a lot of twists as both characters seem to have a lot going on as well as the side stories from other secondary characters which keep the story fresh and page turning.

There are some steamy and sexy scenes between Carter and Raine and we see Raine get more of a backbone as Carter tries to make her life hell. There were times when you wanted to slap Carter up in the head for the things he did, but the more we got to know about this character, you kind of understood where his vulnerabilities in not being the best came from. Add to the mix some great secondary characters like Lena and Cassius who helped Raine on her journey of self-discovery and Kian who had his own story to tell but also made Carter think about what he needed to do to win Raine back.

I loved that this book was set during Halloween as it gave it a suspenseful and at times spooky feel to the read as really helped to add to the world that I as a reader became hugely engrossed in. Having loved Becca Steele’s previous series, this is another book to add to the list of must read!

ARC received for a fair, honest and sometimes long review. All opinions are my own. 😊
