My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars
Trick Me Twice is a standalone novel
by Becca Steele. The book focuses on Carter Blackthorne and Raine Laurent.
Carter is a football player and bonafide king of Alstone High School. He’s arrogant,
rich and also vulnerable. Raine is his neighbour and all-around good girl. She
is put on a pedestal by Carter’s family and he’s told to be more like her at
every opportunity, but things aren’t as rosy for Raine as Carter would like to
think. Hiding in the shadows, Raine has social anxiety, her family is on the
verge of being broke and even though she lives with her aunt, she is bringing
herself up.
The story looks at the developing
relationship between the two main characters. When Raine inadvertently tricks Carter,
he does his all-round best to make her pay, whilst in the shadows something
more sinister is brewing. This is a bully romance with a lot of twists as both
characters seem to have a lot going on as well as the side stories from other
secondary characters which keep the story fresh and page turning.
There are some steamy and sexy
scenes between Carter and Raine and we see Raine get more of a backbone as Carter
tries to make her life hell. There were times when you wanted to slap Carter up
in the head for the things he did, but the more we got to know about this character,
you kind of understood where his vulnerabilities in not being the best came
from. Add to the mix some great secondary characters like Lena and Cassius who helped
Raine on her journey of self-discovery and Kian who had his own story to tell
but also made Carter think about what he needed to do to win Raine back.
I loved that this book was set during
Halloween as it gave it a suspenseful and at times spooky feel to the read as
really helped to add to the world that I as a reader became hugely engrossed
in. Having loved Becca Steele’s previous series, this is another book to add to
the list of must read!
ARC received for a
fair, honest and sometimes long review. All opinions are my own. 😊
