My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars
Bully King by Andi Jaxon is an
amazing and emotional story about finding love, overcoming adversity and trying
to be who you are in a world which can often be cruel and unkind. The story
focuses on Jonah the Pastor’s son and Roman, the school and town’s superstar
quarterback. Jonah is the new boy in town and boy does he know it. The first
day at school goes down pretty quickly when Roman sets his sights on him and he
and his team decide to make his life a living hell and it seems to just
progress in a spiral from there.
Roman is a character that you love
to hate. Not only is he a cocky all-star football player, but he seems to have
the world at his feet. It is only as we delve more into his story that there is
more than meets the eye. We see the relationship that he has with his mother
and father and how that affects who he is. He also has these huge expectations
for himself and knows what he has to do to escape the narrow-minded town that
he lives in, whilst completely living a lie and falling or someone who could
change his life as he knows it. Is he redeemable? Well’ you’re just going to
have to read the book to find out!
Both Jonah and Roman fight demons in
this book and at times it is heart-breaking to read. There are times when Roman
is abusive and cruel and although we get why he does the things that he does,
there is some small part of it which as a reader is hard to forgive. But, in
saying that the relationship that both Jonah and Roman have with each other is
full of love, angst and some very steamy scenes! I also have to say that
Jonah’s sister Mary was also a great addition to the book and she certainly had
a part to play in helping these two characters get together.
This book will speak to many people,
not just those of the LGBTQ+ family because the biggest message it gives us as
a reader is hope. The hope to love whoever you want, without being afraid and
without consequence. I have to say that this is probably one of my favourite
M/M reads this year! The writing is phenomenal, the emotions are off the charts
and the story keeps you wanting to turn the pages. I can’t wait to see what
else this author comes up with!
ARC received for a
fair, honest and sometimes long review. All opinions are my own. 😊
