Review: Born in Blood by Alexandra Ivy

Born in Blood Born in Blood by Alexandra Ivy
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Born in Blood is the first book in the Sentinels Series by Alexandra Ivy. If you’ve read any of Ms. Ivy’s previous books you know that they are going to be hot, hot, hot!

This book sees Sergeant Duncan O’Connor a Kansas City cop investigating the murder of an erotic dancer in her home, with no clear motive and also missing her heart! Enter Callie Brown, a ‘freak’ from the nearby city of Valhalla, a place where ‘High Bloods’ or those with magical powers live. Callie is sent to help O’Conner due to her psychic abilities with finding and catching the murderer before he kills more people. Here the action begins. Both characters are on the hunt for a necromancer (raiser of the dead), but all is not what it seems and we are taken back in time to figure out the background about said criminal as well as how the Sentinels come about.

This story centres on prejudice, passion and fantasy and two people working together who really aren’t that different. Sometimes O’Conner comes across as a little bit righteous in his way of thinking as a mortal and you kind of want Callie to stick up for ‘freaks’ everywhere a little bit more, but overall they are two very strong characters with a lot going for them (although the cover of the book does not show how Callie really looks i.e. she has long hair on the cover but short hair in the book). Other characters such as Fane, Serra, Wolfe and The Mave were really interesting characters and it is going to be exciting to see how their stories develop. I’m particularly intrigued to learn about Wolfe!

The plot for this story is really intriguing, centering on necromancy and the power that it brings! In parts of the story the necromancy was a little creepy, as though you were almost in the room when things were happening (the sign of a good book for me). The passion between Callie and O’Conner was pretty much a go from the first page which was fine as the story did jump in to them both knowing each other for a while and a little bit of sexy time always makes for a good read.

Overall though, a comfortable 4 star read for me and I will certainly be reading the next books in this series.
