Review: Written in Red - Anne Bishop

Written in Red Written in Red by Anne Bishop
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

I have to say that Anne Bishop is my favourite new author find! Written in Red is the first book of The Others series and it is amazing. This first book focuses on Meg Corbyn who is on the run from some very nasty people because she is a Blood Prophet or Cassandra Sangue. This means that she can make prophecies through the cutting of her skin. She stumbles into The Others…Terra Indigene territory where she comes across the often growly, Simon Wolfguard. Simon doesn’t have much to do with humans but he gives Meg the job of Human Liaison which is a cute term for someone who works and delivers mail to all the species that live in and out of the Courtyard. But, nothing is ever what it seems and it looks as though someone wants Meg back so badly, they’ll even go up against The Others to get her!

This story was amazing. You are transported into The Others territory in which you meet a lot of quirky characters including Tessa, who you just want to know more about as well as the strange Crows and the Wolves, who although are distrusting of Meg, really step up to the plate when she needs them too. The hierarchy of the Courtyard as a whole as well as the individual groups are really interesting and I am hoping to see more development of that in later books. Basically, I’m just plain nosy and want to know what’s going on 😊.

I also really liked that there wasn’t really any romance in this book, yet Meg and Simon seem to have a slow burn of a relationship which will be interesting to see develop over the course of the series. It will also be intriguing to see the development of other characters such as Vlad and Police Officer Montgomery and whether they will meet someone and keep their roles in other books.
This is an amazingly well written urban fantasy book. Anne Bishops writing is so descriptive you feel like you’re standing in the book as an active participant rather than just that of a reader. I can’t wait to read more of this series and highly recommend it to any UF fans out there.
