Deal with the Devil by Kit Rocha is part of the new Mercenary Librarians series. The first book in the series focuses on introducing us to new characters: Nina and Knox and their motely crew of others. Nina is an information broker and leader of her mercenary librarians living in a dystopian world after numerous wars and technology crashes. She helps her local community to survive and stay safe from roughs and those that would do them harm. What makes her and her crew different is that she has been modified. Having escaped from places years before that were experimenting on people, they are trying to keep under the radar of the government organisation that is trying to find them and to control society.

Enter Knox, A Silver Devil soldier and mercenary who is trying to find one of his people who have been kidnapped. The only complication is that they want Nina instead. What follows is a lot of secrecy on Knox and his crews’ part as they try to stay separate from Nina and her people whilst learning more about them and realising that they are good people.

If you’ve read the Beyond series, you’ll know that the authors write dystopian romance really well and this book is no different. Being the first book in the series there is a lot of background information on all of the characters and how they have ended up where they have and what they are doing in order to survive. Nina and Knox’s relationship grows quite quickly, but they are suited. What makes the books though is the other characters in the story and it will be interesting to see them have their own book and how their community develops over time and with the weight of the government trying to look over their shoulders.

There is definitely a lot going on in this book with science, people’s backgrounds, betrayals and figuring out where people fit. But it is an enjoyable read and it will be intriguing to see what happens next.

Review: Healing My Heart - Gina Azzi

Healing My Heart by Gina Azzi is book 4 in the Second Chance Chicago series and can be read as a standalone. The book tells the story of Charlie and Evan. Both of them have a past with each other, but Evan wasn’t willing to stand up and make a commitment to Charlie, so she left Chicago to finish her education. Years later, they come back together again when Charlie comes home for the holidays to help not only her family but also Evan’s family, when she helps him to look after his son, Ollie.

Even though Charlie wants some distance between her and Evan, he seems to be everywhere she is, popping up with his cute son, who ends up roping her into helping him make an epic Christmas present for his dad. But things aren’t smooth sailing for the pair as they start growing closer and people from both of their pasts pop up to cause some major drama.

This was a beautifully written book with some real drama thrown into the mix. Evan and Charlie are both great characters to read about and you feel their uncertainty about how their life is going and what they want through every page.  This is a sweet, second chance romantic read with some Christmassy elements thrown into the mix to make it a bit more magical. I love the relationship that Charlie has with Ollie, Evan’s son and the fact that Evan realises that he hasn’t always been a constant father figure in his life. If you like heart-warmers, then this is the book for you!

Review: Coyote - Lila Rose

Coyote is book one in the new series Hawks MC: Next Generation by Lila Rose. The book focuses on Cody ‘Coyote’ Marcus, who we met in previous book as the son of Talon and Zara (who had their own story in a previous book/series) and Channa Edwards. Channa is awkward, sweet and is totally hot for Coyote, not that she will ever tell him, especially with what happened in school. One night when she gets stuck in the middle of an attack on a person who is associated with the MC, Channa is reintroduced not only to Cody but also the rest of the MC who see how sweet and strong she is. 

Cody can’t quite place where he has met Channa before. He knows she owns the local bakery and helped a friend out of a difficult situation, putting her in the crosshairs of a local gang. But she intrigues him and he knows that she’s different. We see how both characters develop some really hot and steamy feelings for each other whilst trying to navigate family, friends and situations which get thrown at them.

This book was full of funny, laugh out loud moments. Some sassy one liners and some sad, heart-breaking moments where you felt like the rug was pulled out from under you. There is certainly a lot of chemistry between the two of them as well as some heart-felt moments which shows the MC family and what it means to be a part of that. I especially liked how we see more of Cody’s relationship with his mum and dad and his brother is hilarious!

Channa is just such a relatable character. She says what she thinks (even when it comes out like verbal diarrhea). She is sassy, shy, loyal and oh so strong. Even though she is rather introverted, she doesn’t let that stop her. Her relationship with her co-workers was hilarious at times and super sweet as was her relationship with Cody and the MC. At the beginning of the story we see how scared she was and how she becomes her own queen as her story develops. The love she had for her mother was special as is the love that she has for Cody. She is kind of perfect for him and totally help to balance him out. 

This is certainly a page turner and a great start to a new series. It is going to leave you with all of the feels!

Captive of Wolves is book one in the new paranormal, reverse harem series by Eva chase. The story focuses on Talia, a human who has been captured by the fae because her blood is different and can help heal (although temporarily) the curse that the fae have been going through when it is a full moon, becoming violent werewolves. Talia is abused both physically and mentally in a horrific manner until one day she is ‘rescued’ by four men, but Talia could have gone from one place of captivity into another.

The four fae that have rescued Talia: August, Sylas, Whitt and Kellen are all surprisingly different. One is a leader, one has a kindness to him, one hides his hurt and one becomes a victim of his own violence, but they all have one thing in common, the curse. We delve through the story with each character trying to make a claim on Talia, who although being human has an inner fire in her that not even torture and abuse can extinguish. The story follows the development of all of their relationships (whether good or bad) and why Talia’s blood is so important. We only get hints of it throughout the book.

As it is a first book there is a lot of world building and description of why the brothers have become outcasts in their fae society. We also have small glimpses of Talia’s family and the hurt she feels on not seeing them again. I also enjoyed the two and fro of the brother’s relationship with Talia as they try to figure out why she is important as well as how each of them will navigate a relationship with her.

There is definitely a lot going on in this book and very few questions answers (hello series) as well as a huge cliff-hanger at the end. I can’t wait to see what else happens with these characters.

“Why does this feel so right?” She broke the kiss, blinking up at me with her big honey eyes.

“Because maybe it is. Maybe we just both have to take a chance.”

“I can’t do it again. I can’t watch someone I...” She stopped herself, letting out a heavy sigh. Part of me was relieved. I didn’t want to ever hear those words. “I’ll never be the most important thing in your life. I deserve that, Levi. I deserve to come first.”

Her honesty shook me to the core. Phoebe had scars. The deep kind. The kind I knew I couldn’t fix. The kind I knew I would only rip open if I pursued this thing with her.

But I couldn’t walk away.

I couldn’t do it.

So long as she was on tour with us, we would continue to go around in circles until one of us cracked. Or I fucked things up for good.

Touching my head to hers, I breathed her in. “I’m not a good guy, Bee, but I’d try to be good for you.”

A shiver ran through her as she swayed gently. She was drunk. Maybe more than I’d first thought.

“Come on,” I said, guiding her toward the bed. “You should get some sleep.”

Phoebe began stripping out of her clothes with haste, as if they were suffocating her. “Stupid shirt,” she groaned as she tried to yank it over her head. 

I stood back, smothering the laughter rumbling in my chest. “Need some help?”

Her eyes snapped to mine, glittering in the dark. “I can manage.”

After a couple more failed attempts, I crouched down and nudged her hands away.  “Here, let me.” My fingers brushed her bare skin, and she whimpered again. 

My dick strained against my jeans, desperate to feel her again. But the next time I was inside her, I wanted Phoebe to know exactly who she was fucking. 

I pulled back the cover. “In you go.”

“I can’t believe this happening,” she mumbled. “How embarrassing.” Phoebe buried her face in the pillow.

I made quick work of stripping down to my boxers and climbed in bed beside her. She tried to roll away, putting as much space between us as possible.

But fuck that.

I hooked my arm around Phoebe’s waist and pulled her back against my chest. 

“Levi, we can’t snuggle...”

“Why the fuck not?” I tangled my legs with hers, fighting the urge to press my hard length right up against her ass.

“Because I’m your assistant and you’re...” She let out a little huff of frustration.

“It’s okay, honeybee,” the nickname rolled off my tongue as easy as breathing, “you can say it. I’m the best sex you’ve ever had.” I breathed against the shell of her ear.

Her sweet laughter filled the small room. “You’re definitely the biggest ego I’ve ever had.
