Review: Touched by Fire - Kel Carpenter

Touched by Fire Touched by Fire by Kel Carpenter
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Touched by Fire is book one in the Demons of New Chicago series by Kel Carpenter and boy does it pack a punch. The story looks at Piper, a bounty hunter who is both strong, sassy and takes no poo from anyone! She hates magic with a passion but there is something about her that makes her ‘not human’, even though she tries to hide it. On a night where she has to stop a group of witches from raising a demon, her plans go awry, and the hunter becomes the hunted and she has a bigger price on her head than her former boss trying to kill her….a demon that thinks she’s his mate!

This book was action packed and a lot seems to happen in in, from seeing a little bit into Piper’s past to her budding friendship with witch Nathalie who become something like a dynamic duo! The two try and survive, but when they are pitted against Piper’s former boss…Lucifer…yes ‘the’ Lucifer, things don’t always go to plan. Throw into the mix the demon, Ronan and you have an action-packed urban adventure.

This book was really enjoyable, and I’m surprised that I hadn’t read this author before. I enjoyed the switch between characters so that we found out more about what they were thinking, and planning and I especially liked the snarkiness that Piper and Nathalie had with each other. It is going to be interesting to see how that friendship develops.

The story does end with a cliff-hanger, but for once that doesn’t bother me and I can’t wait to see the trouble that Piper gets into next as she figures out what she is and tries to stay alive!
