Review: Sweet Pea - Jack Davenport

Sweet Pea Sweet Pea by Jack Davenport
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐ stars

Sweet Pea is book four in the Burning Saints MC by Jack Davenport. The story focuses on newly appointed ‘Road Captain’ Sweet Pea Kimble. A lot if going on in Sweet Pea’s life, not only with his promotion but with his club in general  as issues with a rival club come to a violent head and his instant attraction to Assistant District Attorney Callie Aimes whose passion for justice might just cost her, her career.

Both Sweet Pea and Callie burn white hot as they try to balance their lives, hearts and secrets whilst trying to stay safe. There is a lot of two and froing with Sweet Pea as he deals with his past and present, it is only through unforeseen circumstances that he admits his feelings for Callie. I also liked that Callie was so smart and quirky whilst trying to fight for justice of the downtrodden.

There is certainly a lot going on between these two characters with some exceptionally hot scenes. Characters from previous books make an appearance and we learn a little bit more about others. This is a fast paced MC read that anyone who likes this genre should give it a try.

The time has come to make the real villains of this story suffer our wrath.

Heirs to the Richfield fortune, they have deluded themselves into thinking they are untouchable and beyond reproach.

How wrong they are.

Their debt must be paid.

And we demand it be done in blood.

Colt

I knew sooner or later the Society would knock on my door.

It was only a question of time.

But like all things in my wretched life, they had to single me out and make their treacherous demands that more inconvenient for me.

They want me to expose some unknown dark family secret.

I’m a f*cking Richfield—secrets are part of my damn birthright.

But that’s alright. I’ll play along.

They might think they hold all the cards in this twisted game of theirs, but little do they know, I’ve got an ace up my sleeve.

Dressed in pencil skirts, f*ck-me heels, and cat-frame glasses, Emma Harper is about to hand-deliver the Society to me on a silver platter.

They think they’re coming for me and mine?

Not going to happen.

I’m the one coming for them.

Emma

Colt Turner.

Egotistically vain.

Unapologetically arrogant.

Self-centered and morally bankrupt—all the traits I despise in a man.

Yet, for all his faults, he could be the key to solving the enigma that has baffled me for years.

The Society has eluded me for the last time, and surprisingly enough, Colt is the only one who can help me unmask them once and for all.

I’ve been waiting my entire life for this moment. I can’t turn back now.

No matter who gets hurt in the process.

Even if that person is me.

Excerpt:

The cold Richfield heir sat proudly on his wall,

But all it would take was one good push to watch him fall.

Not even all the king’s horses or all the king’s men,

Would be able to put Colt Richfield Turner back together again.

I’ve always been fond of nursery rhymes. Growing up, I loved putting my own little spin on them, making the childish poems that more enjoyable for me. My mother used to do it all the time when she tucked me in at night. While other kids my age loved to hear fabled tales about slaying dragons and conquering monsters, she knew no bedtime story could ever compare to when she sang these little rhymes to me. Especially when she made sure they depicted the people in my life so perfectly.

And in this very minute, unbeknownst to him, the altered Humpty Dumpty rhyme suits Colt like a fine leather glove.

Discreetly, I lean back against my auditorium chair, watching my prey from my peripheral as he scrolls through his feed on his phone, ignoring the lecture taking place. In his wine-colored Tommy Hilfiger sweater, a color he intentionally picked out knowing it would accentuate his best feature—his sparkling emerald eyes—he dons his usual cool expression, broadcasting how his mere presence in this classroom should be considered a privilege and not a give in. It’s no secret Colt is vain to his very core. He enjoys the regal air he puts out into the world, the very one he’s showcasing now, intent on reminding us mere mortals that no one in this room could ever measure up. That he’s better than everyone he could ever come in contact with and it would serve us well to remember that.

And in most cases, he’s right.

He is better.

Colt was born and bred into a family whose sovereign power can be felt just by walking down any Asheville street that bears their last name. Everyone knows that he, along with his three sisters and cousin, are the last Richfield heirs—a dynasty that most would sell their souls to be a part of. Colt has been disciplined to be refined and elevated in his stature, so his pretentious vanity isn’t mind boggling. It’s just fucking infuriating to watch.

Cold.

Heartless.

Narcissistic.

That is the very definition of who Colt Turner is.

He only shows a sliver of humanity when he has some woman underneath him, and even then, he discards them as easily as most would a day-old newspaper. Yet for all his faults, the female population around campus can’t seem to get enough of him. It’s almost as if they believe one of them might hold the power to change his stone-cold heart into feeling something.

But I know better.

Colt doesn’t feel. He’s incapable of it.

Most people would constitute his cold apathy as being his biggest flaw, but for me, I actually believe it’s his best asset. One I’ve made sure to take into account in my carefully laid out plans of revenge.

In war, it’s not only relevant that you have the best weapons to use against your enemy but that you also aim them where they will do the most damage. And to a man like Colt, who seems impervious to everything around him, your aim needs to be precise and true. In the art of destruction and carnage, I’ve learned that every great general has a weakness, and the chink in Colt’s clever fabricated armor is secrets. Secrets he keeps hidden under such a callous exterior and secrets others close to him have kept concealed from him all his life.

Yes.

Secrets can be a powerful weapon if you have the fortitude to use them correctly and to Colt’s misfortune, I am more than equipped to handle his downfall. I yearn for it. Hunger and thirst about the upcoming day where I witness his case-hardened heart break into a thousand small pieces before my very eyes. The ice in his veins will boil over as madness sets in, betrayal living rent-free in his mind. Although, I won’t be able to boast who had a hand in his suffering, I’ll bask in the glory of his demise just the same. It’s sure to be one of my biggest triumphs against the Richfield’s.

That is until I go after Lincoln.

But as the saying goes the best should always be left for last. Yet, I can’t help the smile that tugs at my lips, knowing that Lincoln will suffer just as much as Colt will soon enough. The warmth that flutters in my chest regarding both cousins impending ruin has the mimicking effects of an illegal drug—addictive and all-consuming. For so long, I have deprived myself of indulging in it, but when the day finally arrives, it will only make their misfortune taste that much sweeter to me.

However, my focus must maintain purely on Colt for now. Not that I’m complaining. When I sink my teeth into his devastation, I’ll make a feast out of the pretentious, arrogant heir. I’ll engorge in his misery and suffering like a banquet prepared solely in my honor. It’s time that I am sat at the head of the table and be given the retribution that’s so rightfully mine. I’ve been starved for it long enough.

But all good things come to those who wait.

New Release: Destructive King - Rachel Van Dyken

Destructive King by Rachel Van Dyken is now live!

A mafia romance about love and loss by Rachel Van Dyken, the number one New York Times bestselling author of the Eagle Elite series.

...When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.
 -- Mary Elizabeth Fyre

"I'm sorry for your loss." I would rather be tortured for an eternity than hear those damn words from one more person, as if Claire, my dead fiance, was a cell phone or car keys.
How about, I'm sorry your life is over.
I'm sorry you want to die too.
I'm sorry you see her in your dreams and wake up only to relive the nightmare.
I'm supposed to be the strongest of them all. Ash Abandonato, ruler, assassin, made man, brother, friend--instead, I hurt everyone I touch in hopes that they'll feel even a sliver of the pain that bears down on my shoulders.
I didn't lose.
It was taken from me.
And it's all her fault, Annie Smith.
I daydream about her death.
And then I close my eyes, and I see her soft smile. I feel her touch, her kiss--it was a mistake what we did that night, but I can't take it back, and now she's under my father's protection--my protection.
My worst enemy.
The woman I'm the most attracted to.
I can't decide if I want to strangle her or kiss her, and now that she's stuck in my life, my only goal is to make her feel the same loss I do and destroy her in the process.
I'll trick her with my touch.
Seduce her with my kiss.
And in the end, when my enemy is at her most vulnerable--I'll bring down an entire Empire and continue my reign as King.
Bow down, I'll say as I bring the Five Families to their knees.
Blood in.
Never out.
Damned.

Review: Wrapped in Ink - Carrie Ann Ryan

Wrapped in Ink Wrapped in Ink by Carrie Ann Ryan
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐ stars

Wrapped in Ink is book one in the Montgomery Ink: Boulder series by Carrie Ann Ryan. The book focuses on Liam Montgomery and Arden Brady. Arden has spent most of her life in and out of hospital battling a disease that no one can see. Having lost friends, jobs and having to rely on her family to keep herself going, she is surprised when she meets Liam, who seems to be the epitome of ‘put together’. Little does Arden know that Liam is also facing his own challenges and questioning who he is as a man.

This is a low angst story about two people meeting and having to deal with the thing’s life throws at them. The story centres heavily on what it is like to deal with a long-term illness and how that affects every aspect of your life. We also have Liam’s story as he goes through an identity crisis whilst juggling work and his relationship with Arden.

This was a nice, easy read book with some lovely characters. I also liked Arden’s brothers and it will be interesting to see if we get more from them. Arden’s dog is also hilarious and mischievous which broke up some of the more serious content of this book. A good start to a new series.

Review: Styx and Stones - Kristine Allen

Styx and Stones Styx and Stones by Kristine Allen
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Styx and Stones is book 2 in ‘The Demented Sons MC – Texas’ series by Kristine Allen. The story focuses on Styx and Gwen. Styx is the Enforcer for his MC, but his life gets turned on its head when he is betrayed by someone he loves, and it leaves him feeling desolate about a lot of things. That changes one night when he meets Gwen, a sweet schoolteacher , who he spends one magical night with. Not thinking he’ll ever meet the strait-laced woman again; he goes all out….but fate has a way of intervening and throwing Gwen back into his path.

Styx and Gwen just seem to work. Although Styx has a lot of rough edges, he is also super sweet and we see that in the way he treats Gwen, who having just got out of a bad relationship it a little bit anxious about starting a new relationship. Especially someone from a motorcycle club, has tattoos and doesn’t seem to fit into a box she’s created. Gwen has also been hurt in the past and this comes out in the way she lives her life and interacts with people, always thinking she isn’t good enough, but Styx soon changes that perception.

This is a really good addition to the new series. There is enough angst, passion and twist and turns to keep you turning the pages. Of course, if you love your men sexy and alpha, then you’re going to love this book. A wonderful story with some great characters!

Review: Property of The Mountain Man - Gemma Weir

Property of The Mountain Man Property of The Mountain Man by Gemma Weir
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Property of the Mountain Man by Gemma Weir is a sizzling hot read and is book one in the Montana Mountain Man series! The story looks at the characters Beau and Bonnie. Beau is a grizzly bear of a man. An alpha male with caveman tendencies, but he also has a good heart. He has set his sights on the slightly shy and sweet, Bonnie who has had a crush on her mountain man forever! It isn’t until Beau’s chances with Bonnie might be taken way from him, that he steps up to the plate and claims her as his!

Bonnie and Beau together just work. Even though Bonnie has some trepidations when it comes to Beau and their relationship, they both kind of go full throttle. I liked that Bonnie stood up for herself, not only with Beau, but also with her brother who could be a butthead! I loved that she was sassy, but also young and still trying to find her place in the world. She has such a soft spot for Beau and his brothers and at times questioned her feelings as she seemed to have Beau on a pedestal for such a long time.

What can I say about Beau? He is a dominant caveman, but one with the kindest heart. Yes it took him a while to figure out what he was feeling for Bonnie, but when he got there, he went all out! The difference in age between the two and this has to be one of the steamiest books I have read! I can’t wait to see more of the brothers fall for their women. The story flowed at a fast pace and had some drama and angst, but nothing that wasn’t believable.

If you love age-gap, super steamy romances with sassy female characters and alpha males, then this is the one for you! Bring on the next book in the series!

ARC received for a fair, honest and sometimes long review. All opinions are my own. 😊
