The Long Game by Rachel ReidMy rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 stars The Long Game by Rachel Reid is book 6 of the Game Changers series and this is the second book to feature Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov and the progression of their relationship. Having been together for over 10 years, it seems that their relationship is still top secret, especially more so from Shane’s end, who seems to be struggling with coming out and what that would mean for his NHL career. On the other side we have Ilya who is equally scared by ready to announce to the world that he loves Shane but is also battling his own demons.
We’re thrown into the thick of the story as we see through both characters eyes what they say to each other and what isn't being said which often leads to conflict between the two. You really see the struggle that Ilya is going through at times and how vulnerable he becomes (compared to when he pops up in other stories).
The spicy scenes between the two are still equally hot and interspersed throughout the story, but there is also the added bonus of the love shared between the two characters which gives this book a chef’s kiss from me. We are definitely immersed in the struggle to come out, either when you’re not ready, you're scared or you don't know how it is going to affect your future. There are some hard moments to read in this book due to the topic of sexuality and coming out which will resonate with anyone who has ever had to do it, but the author (I think), has done it in a really good, emotional way which pulls on your heartstrings.
Although I do love Shane (because who doesn't love his OCD tendencies), I do have to say that I have a soft spot for Ilya, especially in this book where we see more of a soft side to him rather than always being the dominating Captain.
Overall, if you like hockey, some very steamy scenes and some great characters, then this is going to be a great addition to your e-reader of choice! Now, onto the next one!
