Review: Rule: The Finale - L.A. Cotton

Rule: The Finale Rule: The Finale by L.A. Cotton
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Rule is book 3 in the Black Hearts Still Beat series by L.A. Cotton and we’re finally getting to the ending of Rafe and Eva, something we have been waiting for what feels like forever. After the cliff-hanger of book 2, we see how the relationship has developed between the two main characters with the complications of being famous, secrets coming to light and Rafe’s brother, Levi making life more difficult for everyone.

Rafe and Eva have grown up throughout the first two books and in this book, we see the steely determination that both have to put each other first, ahead of fame and other people trying to sabotage their relationship. Eva for me is a classically strong character, after enduring what she has throughout her short life, we see her determined to succeed and also help both Rafe and Levi become the people she knows they can be. Although I think there are moments of frustration on her behalf especially when we see Rafe do things which sabotage their relationship. He has been the sole carer for his brother for such a long time and is now having to allow him to stand on his own two feet.

We see into the life of those whose sole job is to entertain and how exhausting and mentally draining that can be, forever being on the road and having no real home for months at a time. L.A. Cotton is really good at reeling us as a reader into the complexities of her character’s lives and how it can be hard and exhausting.

The rest of the band including Levi make an appearance and give this book a feel-good factor to it, as well as some angst and drama thrown in for good measure and entertainment value. I can’t wait to read more about other members of the band and their road ahead…because we all know it’s not going to be a smooth one.

Review: Tempting Devil - Veronica Eden

Tempting Devil Tempting Devil by Veronica Eden
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

OMG, what did I just read! Veronica Eden has done it again in this amazing bully genre novel. Tempting Devil is book two in the Saints & Sinners series and looks at the characters Blair and Devlin. Blair is just trying to survive and keep the roof over hers and her mum's head. To make her life even harder she seems to be on Devlin’s hit list. Taking matters into her own hands, she tries to steal from Devlin which ends up with her having to make a deal with him so that she doesn’t get into any more trouble. Herein lies the problem as she has now made a deal with the Devil and he is going to do anything in his power to break her and make her submit.

Devlin is a dark, brooding character who is bringing himself up. Often cool and aloof, he knows how to play a part and he does it well. The only one he can’t seem to hide from is Blair and for that he is going to make her pay!

The relationship between Blair and Devlin is intense, dark and emotional. The things Devlin does to Blair is often cruel and humiliating, something which he seems to take pure pleasure in…until the point comes where he can’t break her. Blair is one of those strong, sassy heroines. Although she may be forced into doing things for Devlin, she is no one’s puppet and even coerces him into his own corner which was enjoyable and intriguing to read about.

There is so much going on in this book, from family dynamics, characters own self-worth and emotional trials and tribulations. But it is the development of the relationship that Blair and Devlin have that is so fascinating. It runs together so seamlessly (albeit with some communication issues along the way), but Blair is certainly Devlin’s saving grace and it is interesting to watch Devlin become part of a relationship and how they are meant to work, since he doesn’t have that with his parents. Scenes are sexy, intense, heart-breaking and just beautifully written about two characters that complement each other.

I can’t wait to see what book 3 has in store for us as it’s Bishop’s turn next! A must read for 2020!

Review: Heart Strain - Michelle Notaro & Sammi Cee

Heart Strain Heart Strain by Michele Notaro
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Heart Strain by Michele Notaro and Sammi Cee is book one in the Interlocking Fragments series. The book focuses on Holden and Jameson. Holden’s twin brother has been shot in an arrest gone wrong and he needs to rush back to his bedside, but being back in Baltimore is hard for Holden and his family house holds a lot of bad memories in general for him. Enter Jameson, Holden’s brothers work partner, a man who holds a lot of guilt regarding what has happened to Hendrix, even though it wasn’t his fault and carrying around a lot of baggage due to his family’s treatment of him.

Here we have a beautifully woven story about two broken pieces finding each other. Both Holden and Jameson have their own story to tell and we learn about them and what they have been through throughout the story whilst also seeing two people start a new relationship in the face of something tragic which has happened. Both characters bring a lot to the story and there are deep moments of heart-break for the two when they communicate how they feel not only about each other but also about themselves and their respective family members. It certainly is a slow burn read but you want to keep turning the pages to find out what happens not only to the main characters but also the secondary characters too (I hope everyone gets a book!)

This story is all about love, friendship, family and some pretty cute animals too. A must read!

Blurb:
They might be richer than gods, but they’re morally bankrupt.

As far as the boys who run America’s most exclusive international academy are concerned, I’m an unwelcome interloper, an inconvenience, and they’re determined to make my life a living hell.

When Wren Jacobi sets eyes on Wolf Hall Academy’s newest inductee, all he sees is an easy mark. A reserved little girl with a target painted on her back. He knows nothing of my troubled past, though. Nothing of my mother’s suspicious dea
th, or the horrific treatment I’ve had to endure at the hands of my psychotic father.

And he has no idea of the lengths that I, unassuming little Elodie Stillwater, will go to in order to break the savage beast who dreams of breaking me first.

There’s a wolf stalking the forests that surround my new school.
Little does he know…
There are far scarier predators lurking out there in the dark.

Review: Catastrophe Queen - Emma Hart

Catastrophe Queen Catastrophe Queen by Emma Hart
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

This was an easy read, sweet story about Hurricane Mallory. She is a Klutz, ditsy and just an overall hot mess. Living at home with her sex mad parents and visiting relatives, she needs to find a new job and falls into the lap of Cameron her new boss.

Cameron may be Mallory’s new boss, but he is also sexy, smart and rich as well as down to earth which is a unique combination. The dynamic of his family like Mallory’s had laugh out loud moments and he definitely wasn’t put off by Hurricane Mallory.

This was a laugh out loud read. Mallory is sassy, quirky and such a hot mess. She seems to just be a catastrophe. She has a really good banter with her boss Cameron and we watch as their relationship develops into something more serious. Cameron was a great character too and had no qualms about telling Mallory what he thought as well as riling her up when it was necessary. The fact that they came from different backgrounds was interesting and I especially like Cameron’s mum who liked to tell it like it is behind an air of grace
.
Emma Hart books are definitely a must read if you like the HEA, romantic comedy type genre with lots of personality.

Review: Riot House - Callie Hart

Riot House Riot House by Callie Hart
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Riot House is book 1 in the Crooked Sinners series by Callie Hart. The story looks at Wren Jacobi and Elodie Stillwater. Elodie is new to Wolf Hall Academy, having been moved from Israel by her military father. She comes to school carrying a lot of secrets and hoping that she can make it through the next few months before leaving and becoming independent of her father. She’s reserved, quiet and has a history to her that she doesn’t share with others.

Enter Wren Jacobi, one of the Gods of Wolf Hall Academy. He is obsessed with Elodie, even before she comes to his school. He and his two best friends Pax and Dashiell, rule the school, but each have secrets of their own. Wren at the beginning almost wants to destroy Elodie, but his obsession with her comes full circle when things start happening to her at school and the more, he finds out about her. She intrigues him and haunts him, even in his dreams. Wren is an intriguing character because he doesn’t talk to much, he thinks about things on such a deep intrinsic level which leaves you breathless and he has such creativity in him, that when he does talk or we read about his Art, it is like we are experiencing it in real time.

This book is a slow burn as we watch the development of a relationship, from enemies, to friends to lovers. The story is intricately written, with twist and turns, steamy scenes, intricate relationships which are intriguing as much as they are quite puzzling. You never quite get to know the characters 100%, mainly due to the secrets and life experiences that they all seem to have.

The book is also filled with flashbacks and hidden pieces of Elodie’s past which are pieced together in a heart-breaking way whilst high-lighting the lengths people will go to too protect one of their own. This book is a roller-coaster ride for the psyche. I hope you’re ready for the rest of the series!
