Blurb:

One year ago, the boy next door was captured as a prisoner of war.

The boy whose window faces mine.
The backyard buddy who bandaged up my skinned knees.
The childhood crush that kept me up at night, wondering if he’d ever be my boyfriend.
The town hero I wrote endless letters to after he shipped out.
The green-eyed charmer who promised me a kiss the day I turned eighteen.

And now, he’s home.
But he didn’t come back as the boy I once knew.
He’s a man now, one with demons I can’t comprehend.
The damaged soldier keeps telling me I’m not his anymore.
That the war took him, turned him into someone unrecognizable.
What he hasn’t considered is that it took me, too.

He swears there is nothing left between us, that his heart died overseas. But with each look through our windows, we both know his lies are just that. With each fated meeting, the truth only becomes more evident.

Everett Brock occupies the shadows now.
And as much as I try to pull him into the light, it seems the switch is permanent.
What he doesn’t realize is that I’m willing to follow him into the darkness.

Review: Twisted Hearts - Cora Reilly

Twisted Hearts Twisted Hearts by Cora Reilly
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Twisted Hearts by Cora Reilly is part of the fifth book in the Camorra Chronicles and focuses on the relationship between Savio Falcone and Gemma Bazzoli. The book looks at the childhood relationship of the two main characters all the way up to them getting married. It sounds like it would be an easy story, but it isn’t. We see behind the scenes of the tragic home-life that Savio has been brought up in. The things he has seen are really horrific, but that is somehow to be expected when you are part of the Mafia. Savio is cocky and arrogant throughout the whole book and seems to enjoy playing games with Gemma and even sometimes flaunting other women in her face. There are points where he comes across as just too much but then the backstory kicks in and gives you a glimpse of vulnerability.

Gemma on the other hand is the quintessential good, catholic girl who is doing everything she can to be perfect for her family. It did feel like she had a lot of expectations put onto her which could be unrealistic, especially for those of us who may not have come from that background, and at times I felt that her family could be quite judgmental when Gemma was making life decisions, but underneath it all she is a strong woman who has to look past the often cruel way that she is treated by Savio and others in his family.

What I enjoyed about this book was the non-smooth sailing of Savio and Gemma’s relationship, it just felt more real knowing that everything wasn’t tied in a bow as well as the fact that Gemma put Savio in his place when he was being crude or disrespectful towards her. The book does look at the characters individually a lot more than it does them together and ti would be interesting to see more of their relationship in another book.

Overall, a good Mafia read.

EXCERPT

I stare up at him, wanting more of him, wishing he'd push me against the wall and fuck me. I know that it's wrong, our parents are married. I shouldn't even be having these thoughts. His hands go to my ass, and he gently squeezes my cheeks. "Hudson, God, why are you doing this to me?" I whisper, willing myself to walk away but I'm rooted to the spot, he has that pull on me that my body and heart are drawn to him.
"Because Mia, you're mine. You walked into my club and totally eclipsed everyone. Your beauty outshone everyone there, but the best thing about you is that smile of yours. Once you came home with me you cemented the fact that you were mine." His amber eyes darken as his hands tighten on my ass.
"But we don't even know each other." I remind him. Hell, I know nothing about him besides his name and that he owns Synergy.
He pulls me against him and I can feel his erection. I bite back my moan. "Princess, we have all the time in the world to get to know each other."
I shake my head. He seems to have an answer for everything. "You're a smooth talker Hudson Brady."
His smirk is annoying but sexy, "You want a date?"
I narrow my eyes at him, "Have you ever dated anyone?"
His eyes widen as he shakes his head. "No, I don't date." He says it as if it's the most ludicrous thing in the world.
"That's a shame." I don't know why but I feel like someone's punched me in the gut, I shouldn't be surprised that he doesn't date, but I feel a sense of loss that we won't be. Not that we could ever, not now that we're siblings.
"Mia, I'm not an ordinary man, I'm not like those boys you're used to." His hand reaches up, and he brushes a stray hair that's coming down across my cheek to behind my ear. "I've done some fucked up things Mia, that's just who I am."
Looking up into those deep amber eyes of his, "I'm not used to anything Hudson." I confess, "All I know is what you taught me."
His eyes close almost as if he's in pain. "Princess, fuck," he growls, his hand resting on my cheek.
"Hudson, why do I want you when I know I shouldn't?" The words are out of my mouth before I even think, I shouldn't have said them, he's already making this hard for me to walk away and now I've just handed him the ammunition to ramp it up even more.
His hand goes back to my ass and his erection is so big and thick against my stomach. "You want me because I'm yours just as you are mine. Mia, I don't give a fuck if our parents are married, as soon as I sank my dick into you almost two years ago, I knew you were it for me. To wake up and find you gone…" He shakes his head as his eyes darken. "I'm not waiting any longer." His lips descend on mine and every thought I had about walking away vanishes.

Review: Broken Souls - Andi Rhodes

Broken Souls Broken Souls by Andi Rhodes
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Broken Souls by Andi Rhodes was a quick read, MC style book for me with two amazing characters. The story can sometimes be graphic in detail, especially of the abuse that Sadie suffers at the hands of her husband. The book focuses on Sadie leaving her husband and being found by Micah, the President of the local small town MC: Broken Rebel Brotherhood, but this MC is different in the fact that it is made up of ex-military men and women who are there to protect those who are unable to protect themselves.

Micah was a really good character in that he didn't shy away from his PTSD and how that affected how he lived his life. The connection he has with Sadie was instantaneous and when you find out their past history, your heart will melt a little bit.

Sadie is one of those characters that are exceptionally well written and you want to know more about. She is a character that doesn't know her own strength but it certainly comes through on the page. The life she has suffered and how she sees herself are heartbreaking at points and it was sometimes difficult to read how the system can let people down.

This was a quick read for me and although it didn't go into a lot of detail or action regarding how Sadie's husband was caught and punished, it did tie up nicely with a special epilogue at the end.

This is definitely a sweet MC book and I will certainly be interested to read the second book in this series when it comes out. If you like swoon worthy heroes and strong females, then Andi Rhodes books are for you!

Review: Priceless - Miranda Silver

Priceless Priceless by Miranda Silver
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Wow, what an insanely hot book this one and one that I certainly wasn't expecting. This book looks at Christina and Patrick. Christina comes from a family that has everything and high expectations when it comes to Christina, but she never seems to live up to them in contrast to her older sister. More beautiful, more sophisticated and has her life together according to Christina.... but does she. Christina is trying to survive, but mostly from herself. When she is propositioned by Patrick for mind games, humiliation and control she grabs at it, especially as he is going to pay her for her time as long as she agrees to anything he wants.

Patrick is all about control. He sees the needs in Christina and he knows he can control both her body and her mind but the only way he's going to do this is by paying her. That way it becomes a transaction and something he can control. Not everything is what it seems with Patrick though and we see that through the interactions he has with his family and other people in his dorms.

This story keeps you guessing mainly because you never quite find out much about either of the characters except snippets and although sometimes you think a lot of it is in Christina's mind until you see her interactions with her parents and even her sister. There are some particular scenes where you feel Christina is being taken advantage of by her 'friends' and it is actually Patrick's reactions to that that were intriguing for me as a reader. This was mainly due to the fact that he tried to act so aloof but couldn't help but be Christina's savior in the end.

This book was extremely hot! As in red hot! This book is extremely entertaining and I can't wait to see what else this author comes up with!

Review: Pestilence - Laura Thalassa

Pestilence Pestilence by Laura Thalassa
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Wow, this book was certainly different from anything I have read in a while. Centred on the earth after the apocalypse and the return of the Four horsemen. This book focuses on the first Horseman. Pestilence and his journey across the world spreading disease, but he unexpectedly comes across Sara Burn, her need to protect her town and save humanity…. what could possibly go wrong?

This book is hard hitting, raw, often dark with two characters who are certainly polar opposites but wok together really well. Pestilence is well what his name suggests, a guy (who’s not really a guy but an entity) destroying the world and purging it of humans and Sara who is just trying to survive, get back to her family and save mankind. It all seems pretty straight forward in theory but what we have is a really complex book where you feel both sympathy and anger at humanity and are trying to understand a plague that doesn’t discriminate but kind of wish it would as there are genuinely good people in the world. You also have to deal with the ongoing relationship of the two main characters who seem to torture each other whilst falling in love/lust and trying to balance out how that works with two people who certainly sit on two very different posts.

Overall, you have a really great book which makes you think about what you would do if you were ever in that type of situation and at times you do have to push through the cruelty that Pestilence dishes out not only to the world but also to Sara. I guess being reminded that he is redeemable does help in the end. If nothing, this book will definitely make you think.

A great read for those who like dark, post-apocalyptic, paranormal books with some steamy and sometime graphic scenes thrown in.
