Review: The Harder You Fall - L.A. Cotton

The Harder You Fall The Harder You Fall by L.A. Cotton
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

This is the third book in the Rixon Raiders series and my was it a good book. This book looks at Asher and Mya, both from two different backgrounds. The story revolves around how they will make it as a couple when people are standing in their way as well as coming back from tragic events.

This book has a few different story-lines to follow. The first one is of Asher’s. Although from a privileged family, not everything is what it seems. His father is harsh on him and has given him an ultimatum regarding college which also surrounds how he treats Asher’s mother (He’s not a nice character if I’m honest but does seem to have some redeemable qualities). He’s keeping secrets form his friends as he feels like he doesn’t fit with them anymore and the only person who seems to get him is Mya who has her own scars and insecurities.

Mya moved school when things got out of control where she previously lived with her then boyfriend J, who has joined a gang. Moving to a new town should have helped that, but sadly not when you’re judged for your skin colour and background. Mya has had it hard and has had to make some hard decisions in life…she’s hoping that Asher isn’t going to break her heart along the way.
This was a really great story in the fact that it showed the struggles of not only growing up in a small town, but also highlighted the prejudices people have and the roads that some of us have to walk in order to survive. There are some heart-breaking moments between Asher and Mya and you genuinely feel for both characters and what they are going through/ have gone through. It seems as though everyone has an opinion on their relationship and at times aren’t very supportive of them as a couple or as individuals. Asher and Mya seem to hide a lot behind their smiles and only seem to get each other. If only they could live in a bubble!

There are some amazing twists and turns in this book, especially when Asher’s friends find out what his dad has done as well as the twist with Asher’s mum (totally heart-breaking). I would definitely recommend reading this series in order so that you understand other characters that pop up. But if you like your romances, sporty, angsty, steamy and with a dash of suspense, then this is the one for you!

Review: Release - Aly Martinez

Release Release by Aly Martinez
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

This is a sweet story by the author Aly Martinez. It looks at the characters Ramsey and Thea. Ramsey and Thea started off as friends, then lovers until a tragedy takes place which places Ramsey in prison for most of his twenties and Thea waiting for him to come out. But nothing is as easy as it seems and the life Thea thought they could have together is not so easily sought, especially when truths come out that turn Thea's life on its head.

This is certainly a second chance romance, told by the main characters different points of views which I felt really added to the story as we really got into their psyche of feelings and got both sides of the story on what led up to the fateful night when everything changed for both of them.
This was an emotional roller-coaster of a ride with an amazingly instant and hot connection between both Thea and Ramsey. Other secondary characters such as Ramsey's sister and Thea's dad also add to the story and you'll be amazed by the secrets that come out and how sometimes the system doesn't work for everyone.

A really good, page turning, emotional book which will keep you on the edge of your seat and with tears in your eyes at points.

Review: Cruel Prince - Ashley Jade

Cruel Prince Cruel Prince by Ashley Jade
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Cruel Prince by Ashley Jade is a refreshing take on the bully/lover’s genre that seems to be so hot right now. It takes two intensely strong characters, rips them apart then expects them to be like a jigsaw puzzle and just fit back together. But as we know, real life isn’t like that and oh boy is there trials and tribulations along the way in this story!

Dylan and Jace together are a train wreck. Dylan left Royal Hearts Academy four years ago due to family circumstances thinking that everything was fine, but when she comes back to complete her final year, she bumps into her first love Jace Covington and he is not the boy who she left behind. Trying to get to grips with her own drama and that of her cousin, Oakley, she’s not prepared for the cruelty that Jace is going to inflict on her, especially as she doesn’t know why it is happening.
Jace Covington is full of secrets and hate. Hate for the girl that left behind destruction (unbeknownst to her). One thing is for sure, Jace is going to make her pay for what happened to his family, but feelings and emotions get in the way and what he thought he knew about everything isn’t true and his own secrets and guilt come to light.

This book is a roller-coaster of a ride. You need to keep turning the pages to figure out what is going on and when the bombshells are dropped, you need to take cover! This book is intense! From the cruel things Jace invokes on Dylan to watching Dylan literally break (OMG the feels). The passion, the hate, the drama it all just keeps getting thrown at you in this book. Dylan is just an amazingly written character, she is so strong and has put up with so much, you really do want her to keep punching people as she’s so good at it. Basically, there are a lot of feels in this book and not only for the two main characters! I can’t wait to read the next book in this series! This series is going to be addictive…you have been warned!

Review: Hearts and Thorns - Ella Fields

Hearts and Thorns Hearts and Thorns by Ella Fields
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

This is a standalone stepbrother/romance book by Ella Fields in the Magnolia Cove series. It is a beautifully written story which tells the POV of both characters: Jackson and Willa, stepbrother/sister whose relationship is like a car crash that you can’t stop watching. These two characters share a bond that most people can only wish for, only for it to change over the years and develop into something more and which many would see as forbidden.

This is a definite page turner and there are moments in the book which take your breathe away and you’re sometimes left wondering what Jackson is really thinking when it comes to his relationship with Willa. If anything, Ella Fields has created a book which is romantic as it is dramatic with a whole lot of feels thrown in for good measure. But overall, this is a love story of epic proportion, even with its sense of the forbidden which is casually thrown in.

If you like romantic angst, then Ella Fields books are the ones for you!

Review: The Wayward Star - Jenn Stark

The Wayward Star The Wayward Star by Jenn Stark
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

The Wayward Star is the fifth book in the Wilde Justice series by Jenn Stark and you definitely have to have read the previous books to know where you and other characters stand at this point. Sara Wilde is again in the thick of things, trying to keep the peace between the Arcana council whilst preparing for war with the Shadow Court. She also has to deal with an invitation to her high school reunion as well as the Burning Man festival… to try and balance all that she also has to deal with her emotions when it comes to the Magician and moving on with that relationship despite him forgetting who she is and what they had/have together.

This is a fast-paced book with a lot going on and the usual characters making an appearance: Brodie, Nikki, The Devil to name but a few. As usual with Sara, everything seems to be in the air and she is juggling a lot of responsibilities, dealing with betrayals and learning truths about her past which hit her like a semi! There are always some funny moments (Nikki is just hilarious) and a tie in to another series, as well as maybe some redemption from one of the Arcana Council…. we’ll have to wait and see how that develops.

As always with Jenn Stark books there is lots of description, action and will they/won’t they between Sara and the Magician. Although I have to say that the scenes with them in are beautifully written, passionate and heart-breaking at the same time.

Jenn Stark books are definitely books’ that you want to read, entertaining, knowledgeable and fast paced. You need to give them a try!

Excerpt:
Hypnotized by his azure eyes, it wasn’t until he smiled that I realized I was leaning into him with my hand still clenched his shirt. I tried to lean back, but he wrapped an arm around my neck and the other around my waist. “Oh no, you don’t. Not quite yet. Wanna feel your softness up against me a little longer.”
I sighed through my nose. “Nice as that sounds, it’s not a good idea.”
A roguish grin lit his face. “Good ideas are rarely as fun as the bad ones.”
“Always an answer for everything.”
“Far from it,” he said.
His head lowered, lips brushing mine then settling in as he angled my head where he wanted me. This kiss was gentler but no less passionate. My breasts swelled and my whole chest warmed because his actions told me he would be this good or better in bed. I yearned to drive my hand into his hair. That urge shook me out of the moment and I wrenched my lips free.
“Dammit!” I hissed.
He chuckled. “Gotta say, that’s a step up from ‘God damn it!’ Maybe if I kiss you three more times I’ll get your true response.”
“No,” I cried. “No more kissing!”
“Then no more drinking.”
“What?” I asked trying to break out of his hold.
“You had two drinks right? Time for you to go back to your palace.”
“My palace?”
“What it’s called. Big sign out front, babe.”
“Aren’t you observant,” I said and nearly stumbled backward because Beast finally loosened his grip against my trying to step back from him.
His hands shot to my shoulders. “Are you steady? Or did you sneak a shot in there with the wine?”
“No! I know better than that. I just didn’t expect you to finally let go of me.”
He gave me a strange look along with an eyebrow arch.
I steadied myself and stepped around him. “Lucky for you, I need to get to the other side of the river. I hope you have a nice evening, Beast.”

About Amelia Kingston:
Amelia Kingston is many things, the most interesting of which are probably California girl, writer, traveler, and dog mom. She survives on chocolate, coffee, wine, and sarcasm. Not necessarily in that order.

She’s been blessed with a patient husband who’s embraced her nomad ways and traveled with her to over 30 countries across 5 continents (I’m coming for you next, Antarctica!). She’s also been cursed with an impatient (although admittedly adorable) terrier who pouts when her dinner is 5 minutes late.

She writes about strong, stubborn, flawed women and the men who can't help but love them. Her irreverent books aim to be silly and fun with the occasional storm cloud to remind us to appreciate the sunny days. As a hopeless romantic, her favorite stories are the ones that remind us all that while love is rarely perfect, it’s always worth chasing.
